Finding Poker Sites for Ubuntu

While there are more operating systems for PCs than you can shake a stick at, not all operating systems are created equal –  especially not for poker players.

Online poker players, that is.  For example, a few years ago, players who wanted to plunk down some cash at the online felt via a Mac were almost entirely out of luck.  They could run one of the few Java rooms, but those rooms tended to be underdeveloped and have less traffic than rooms with a downloadable client.  They could run a program like Bootcamp to simulate Windows within their Mac, but who wants to buy a Mac just to turn it into a PC?

Not many people.  The landscape eventually changed for players on a Mac, and now almost all online poker rooms have a Mac version –  no need to run awkward simulations any longer.  That’s all well and good for online poker players who have a  Mac, but what about players who are running Linux, Ubtuntu or other, even more obscure operating systems?

These players are in a spot quite similar to the spot Mac players were in just a few years ago.  There are some browser-based games that work, and a handful of downloadable clients, but nothing near total support.

It’s quite difficult to maintain a complete list of online poker rooms that support every possible operating system, so your best bet is to Google your particular operating system – for example, “Texas Holdem on Ubuntu” –  to find a speciality site that focuses on that operating system.  Rooms are always changing their offerings, so it’s best to keep an eye on a particular room personally if you’re very interested in playing there.  You can even email support and ask to be notified when and if they develop a version for the operating system of your choice.
